Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense adalah adalah salah satu tenses yang tergolong 'SIMPLE'. Ciri utamanya adalah simple past selalu menggunakan kata kerja bentuk ke-2 (past verb / V2). Tenses ini antara lain digunakan untuk:

1. Menyatakan suatu kejadian atau kegiatan yang terjadi pada waktu tertentu dimasa lampau.

Contoh:

• I stayed in the hotel last month.
• He ate six times yesterday.
• The seventh grade students visited the National Museum last week.

2. Menunjukkan bahwa suatu kegiatan berlangsung pada jangka waktu tertentu dimasa lampau.

Contoh:

• My father stayed in Qatar for five years.
• Susanti studied in Malaysia for two years.

3. Menyatakan suatu kebiasaan di masa lampau.

Contoh:

• When I was in Jakarta, I often ate Soto Betawi.
• When he was a little boy, he always played football with my friends.

4. Menyatakan kegiatan atau kejadian yang susul menyusul.

Contoh:

• Adi had a piece of bread, drank a glass of orange juice, and finally went to school.
• Mita usually brushed her teeth, washed her face, and changed her dress before went to bed.

5. Menyatakan kegiatan atau kejadian yang berlangsung di tengah-tengah sebuah kejadian atau kegiatan lainnya. 

Contoh

• He had his lunch while talking on the phone.

6. Mengekspresikan perasaan yang dialami pada waktu lampau.

Contoh:

• I was so happy when my parents came here.
• We were so disappointed when we noticed the bad mark.

Kegunaan Lainnya

Selain penggunaan tersebut diatas, Simple Past juga digunakan dalam kalimat pengandaian (Conditional Sentence) tipe ke-2. Adapun formula kalimat pengandaian tipe ke-2 yaitu:
If + Simple Past (S+V2) + Main Clause (S+would+Infinitive)

Contoh:

• If I were rich, I would buy many things.

• If She had good grades, We would be very happy.

• They would give us a bonus if we worked hard.
